2/25/10 - I just spoke with Dave this evening. He brought Sue home last Thursday and has realized that it definitely is a 24/7 job in taking care of her, but he's sure that she's getting better care than what's he's seen in the different nursing homes. God Bless Him!! Sue has been stable for the past month, meaning no pneumonia or other issues. She takes 10-11 different medicines every morning. She has a nurse that comes in for an hour or so, about twice a week. She also has a physical therapist that comes in. Right now, her blood count is low & Dave will find out either tomorrow or Monday, whether or not Sue will need a blood transfusion. I told Dave that I don't wish this on anyone and that I hope he gets some rest, but I know that's impossible. He can't remember the last time he's gotten any sleep.

1/19/10 - I called Dave last evening since I haven't spoken to him since, according to below, last Nov. I figured the Holidays would be a rough and busy time for he and his family, so I didn't want to bother him. Anyway, he just said that it's been a lot of ups and downs. Sue's been at several different locations during the past two mos, including P.S. Rehab and back at Osteopathic. She was moved back to Manor Care yesterday around 4:00 PM. He mentioned that she's made lots of progress, but then hits a road block, which sets her back time after time. She has double pneumonia AGAIN. He said that her mind is working fine; that she can write the answers to the flash cards that they use to quiz her, but due to the lack of muscle use, she still has trouble speaking. She was actually kicked out of the P.S. Rehab program because she wasn't making the progress fast enough for the insurance to cover her therapy. [Most of her ongoing treatment is insurance driven.] Dave is currently working on bringing Sue home so that he can take care of her in their own home. This will be a huge undertaking, but he's been very unhappy with most of the care that Sue has been receiving, so he feels that he can do much better.
As stated previously, it will be a long, slow process throughout the next year or even longer. Please keep Dave & Sue & their families in your prayers!

11/28 - I have no idea where Sue will be come Dec 1st. She has been accepted to Rehab sites...one at Hershey Penn State at the Polyclinic Hospital and the other at Moss in Philly. The catch is the Insurance Co has to approve her which the last time they did not. Sue has made improvements and can use the Alphabet Chart to spell stuff to tell us what she needs. She is able to balance herself on the edge of her bed for close to 5 minutes, so she is making progress. On the downside, they need to adjust her shut, but with the bacteria in her lungs, they need to wait to do anything with that at this time and she keeps her eyes closed a lot, but she is listening to what is being said.
To top things off my Father passed away on Thanksgiving night, which was good as he was having a hard time breathing and was not eating or drinking.
Dave
P.S. Keep the Prayers coming

10/28 - Sue has been transferred back to Select Health located on the 5th floor of Holy Spirit Hospital today 10/28. She will be there until at least Nov. 3rd. Thanks Barb
Dave
10/26 - On Sat, the 24th, Sue was re-admitted to CGOH for pneumonia, she is in room 142 A, visiting hours are now 3:00-8:00 and for family only due to the swine flu. She was doing better on Sunday. As her care is ALL insurance guided as to what they will and will not pay for, I have no idea at this time as to where she will go next - I am guessing either back to Manor Care or Select Health Services located at Holy Spirit. As soon as I know, I will update.

10/14 - Sue is being moved to Manor Care on 17th and Market Streets in Camp Hill on Monday the 19th. This is almost right across from the Pennsylvania Bakery. There has been improvement, but not enough for her to get into a Brain Trauma Rehab Progam at this time.
At this time, Sue can do the following:
Move her fingers on both hands
Move her toes on both feet
Raise her right hand and point to things and wave goodbye, Left hand is not as strong as the right, but can do some of this
Move her right and left foot and raise toes, again right side is stronger
Read 4 flash cards (ie make a fist) and do what it says
Trach came out on Tues; she can faintly say 2 or 3 words
She knows who people are and can nod yes and no answers
All of this improvement has come over the past 2 weeks. In order for her to get into the Brain Trauma unit, she has to being able to stand. She has made great progress, but has a long way to go. Every day she seems to have learned something new and this is what keeps me going.
Thanks,
Dave
P.S. KEEP the PRAYERS coming
*********************************************
10/09 - I know people have been asking, and I've been slacking, but I really don't hear much from Dave at this point. I did run into him last week & he had some positive news...he's pretty sure that Sue now knows who he is. This is major, as he was very, very depressed about her not knowing who he was. He would just like for everyone to keep praying for Sue...it's going to be a long process of at least another 18-24 mos.
09/17 - I've spoken with Dave a few times since Sue has been moved to Holy Spirit. There hasn't been any change...she still remains in a coma.
09/07 - Last Wed, Sue underwent another surgery. She had a shunt put into her brain to drain spinal fluid into her stomach. She was to remain in ICU for approx another 2-3 days, so by now,, she has probably been moved to what they call a "Step Down" facility at Holy Spirit. Dave would also like to thank everyone, again, for all of their thoughts & prayers. He greatly appreciates them.
08/27 - Sue is back in a coma
08/26 - Dave called me earlier this evening to let me know that Sue is back in ICU at Comm Gen'l Osteopathic Hospital with a blood clot & pneumonia.
08/25 - Good news & bad news...Good News - Sue is out of her coma; Bad News - she doesn't know who anyone is. She's had her eyes open now every day since last Fri/Sat. She has some movement in her right leg and shoulder and she can blink and nod for Yes & No.
Sue was moved last evening to Health South in Mechanicsburg; a rehab center/long term care unit. She's in Room 307 and visiting hours are only from 3-8, where in ICU, Dave could visit 24/7. Right now, she is suffering from MRSA [a staph infection] and Dave now has to wear a cap & gown, etc. when he visits with her.
Additional information to add to her Aug 9th surgery - it was to remove an Arterio-Venous Malformation, or AVM, an abnormal collection of blood vessels. "An AVM can be thought of as a "Short Circuit" where the blood does not go to the tissues but is pumped through the shunt and back to the heart without ever giving nutrients to the tissues." This is what she had since birth, not necessarily the aneurysm.
So, technically, she has made great progress since last Friday, but with her move last evening, has hit a set back with this infection.

08/21 - Ok everyone...Dave just stopped by to drop some things off for me, so here's the latest. He said that she looks much better now that they've put the trach in and some other tubes for feeding and drawing blood. She's opened her eyes a... few times, but this doesn't mean that she's out of her coma.
He also mentioned that they've been doing a dopler reading on her brain since she's been there and yesterday was the first day that there weren't any spasms. They will be moving her next week to another health facility. As soon as I find out where, I'll let you know.
08/17 - I received a call from Dave this evening. Very little change. The biggest set back was on Saturday & the Drs said that it is going to be a very long process. They ran some test today & are running some more tomorrow along with putting a trach in so that they can remove some of the other tubes.
Dave asks that you just keep praying for her & thank you for doing so.
08/13 - Stopped by the hospital this evening to check in on Dave & his family. He was there with his daughter & his grandson. There's been no change. They want to thank everyone for their prayers!
08/10 - Sue made it through surgery on Sunday, but she still remains in a coma. He said that they know there is definitely some brain damage. They want to take her for an MRI, but they can't move her in her condition. And he knows that the prognosis is not good. He told me that it could be 3 days, 30. days or longer. [Only 3 out of 100 ever come out with no damage at all.]
They normally don't perform surgery for 3-4 weeks, but in her case, they took her within 3 days. ??
I didn't hear from him at all yesterday, so we'll assume that no news is good news.
8/9 - Dave's wife, Sue, is in critical condition at the Community General Osteopathic Hospital. She is suffering from a brain aneurysm. She has been in a coma since Friday morning and was in stable condition last evening, but things must have changed this morning. They took her into surgery around 11:00 AM & we won't know anything until later this evening. According to Dave, the outcome does not look promising.
I don't expect to hear anything soon, so let's just keep Dave and his family in our prayers. I will try to keep you updated as Dave updates me.
